Why neoprene
Felt bunches, creases and slides. Neoprene has a rubber grip underneath and a smooth fabric top, so it stays put, cushions the tiles and cuts the clatter of the wash to a level your neighbors will thank you for. It also protects a dining table from scratches, which matters more with heavy melamine tiles.
Sizing
- Standard folding card tables are usually about 34 inches square. A mat between 31 and 33 inches fits with a small border and no overhang.
- On a larger dining table, a 33-inch mat still works; the extra table space becomes room for drinks and snacks off the mat.
- If a mat is much bigger than the table, it drapes and tiles slide off the edge. Measure first.
Thickness
Two to three millimetres is the sweet spot: thick enough to muffle sound and cushion tiles, thin enough to roll neatly. Thinner mats do less for noise; much thicker ones are heavy and slow to flatten.

Care and storage
- Never fold neoprene. It holds a memory, and a fold becomes a permanent ridge that catches tiles. Roll it, fabric side out, and store it in its bag or tube.
- Spills: blot immediately. Many neoprene mats can be hand-washed or machine-washed cold and air dried; follow the maker's instructions.
- Flatten before play: unroll the mat 10 minutes before guests arrive so it lies flat.
