How we chose
We have not physically tested every set on this page. We researched and compared sets on the features that matter at a real table: tile count and Jokers, readability of the tile faces, material, rack and pusher design, the case, portability and value, alongside the consensus in player communities. Treat the picks as a shortlist, and check the listing for exact contents before you buy.
What a regulation set needs
- 152 tiles minimum, including 8 Jokers. Most American sets ship with 166 tiles: the 152 you play with, plus spare Flowers, spare Jokers and a few blanks that can replace a lost tile. Do not buy a 144-tile set for American play; those are Chinese sets without Jokers.
- Four racks with pushers. Racks hold your tiles upright and hidden. Pushers are the arms that slide your wall into the middle. Sets without pushers are frustrating; "all-in-one" racks with a permanently attached pusher are the most popular design because there is nothing to lose or assemble.
- Dice. Two is enough. Some sets add a wind indicator or betting chips, which are nice but optional.
What actually matters when you compare sets
Readability
Look for large, high-contrast numerals on the Bams, Craks and Dots. Many sets print Arabic numerals in the corner alongside the traditional symbol, which speeds up beginners and helps anyone playing under dim lamps.
Material
Melamine is the classic choice: dense, opaque, durable and with the traditional clack. Acrylic sets are lighter, allow decorative tile backs and dominate the designer end of the market. Our tile materials guide goes deeper.
Tile size
Standard American tiles are a little larger than most Chinese tiles. Bigger tiles are easier to read and handle but need a bigger table. If you have a small card table, check the set's tile dimensions and add up 19 tiles per wall.
The case
Soft fabric or leatherette bags are lighter and easier to carry to a friend's house. Aluminum attaché cases protect the tiles best and look traditional but weigh more.

- Count the Jokers in the listing. Eight is the standard; a set with none is not an American set.
- Check whether pushers are included, not just racks.
- Read recent buyer photos for tile clarity; product renders can be flattering.
- Buy the current NMJL card separately from the League. Sets do not include it.
