MahjongKit exists to make American Mahjong easier to understand. It is written for the person sitting at a table for the first time, confused by a rule everyone else seems to know, and for the person buying a first set, teaching a friend, or trying to find a local game.
What we are
- An independent educational resource. Nobody pays us to say a rule works a certain way.
- Focused on American Mahjong, the version played with the National Mah Jongg League card. When we mention Chinese, Riichi or other variants, we label them clearly.
- Plain English. We try to answer your question in the first sentence and explain the reasoning afterwards.
What we are not
- We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to the National Mah Jongg League.
- We do not reproduce the annual NMJL card or its list of hands. We teach you how to read it; you buy it from the League.
- We are not the final word. House rules and tournament procedures vary. For formal play, the current card and official rulebook are the authority.
How the site is made
Articles are written and edited by the MahjongKit editorial team and reviewed for clarity and accuracy against reliable current sources. Time-sensitive pages (online platforms, product details, prices) are marked internally and rechecked before updates. Our editorial policy explains this in more detail, and our affiliate disclosure explains how gear pages may earn a commission.
