Many groups count the hand value in cents, so a 25 hand is worth 25¢. Others just keep points on paper.

How do you calculate a Mahjong payout?
Take the value printed next to the winning hand. On a discard, the discarder pays double and the others pay the value. If the winner drew the tile, all three pay double. A Jokerless hand doubles everything, except Singles and Pairs and Quint hands.
Who pays double in American Mahjong?
The player who discarded the winning tile, or all three players if the winner drew it from the wall.
