Practice American Mahjong

Reading about Mahjong only gets you so far. These games and printables let you practice the actual decisions: recognizing tiles, knowing which Dragon goes with which suit, reading a line on the card, and building a hand one draw at a time.

Play a hand

The Solo Practice Hand is the closest thing to a real game you can play alone: a full 152-tile set, a real wall, draw and discard, and the real Joker rules. Pick a line on the practice card, and the game shows how many tiles each line still needs and tells you exactly what is missing if you call Mahjong too early.

Warm up

The Tile Trainer has three short, calm games, each teaching one skill: naming every tile, pairing each Dragon with its suit, and spotting the same number in different suits. They are the building blocks for reading the card.

A suggested path

1. Tile Trainer: tiles.

   Until you can name any tile without thinking.

2. Tile Trainer: Dragons and numbers.

   The two ideas the card relies on most.

3. Solo Practice Hand, relaxed pace.

   Build hands with no draw limit while the rules settle in.

4. Solo Practice Hand, real pace.

   24 draws, about what you get in a real four-player game.

Print and practice

The free printables include a table companion, a Charleston card, a scoring card and a dead-hands card, all free to print and share.
